The CMA History
The Celtic Music Association was created in 1992 by a small group of
visionary individuals who had a hunger and desire to bring Celtic Music to
central Iowa. With the enthusiasm of Jerry Freeman, Father Tom Crowley and
others, a working board was organized and plans for the first concert season
were made. As we enjoy the 12th concert season for the Celtic Music
Association we have an opportunity to look back and celebrate our
accomplishments.
- The Celtic Music Association is governed by a working board of 20 members.
All board members have committee
responsibilities and act as the 'staff' for each concert.
- Past presidents of the Board include: Fr. Tom Crowley, Denny O'Meara,
Laura Murphy, Bryan Hall, Dr. Tom Brekke, Tim Cooney,
Cathy Dodds, Clark Williams, Kimberly Glynn,
Doug Jones, Virgil Kleinhesselink, Mike Nielson, Mike Glynn, and Bernie
Gradoville.
- The mailing list for the CMA numbers 800 with representation from all over
the state of Iowa. The Celtic Music Association newsletter is sent out 4-5
times yearly and provides information on upcoming concerts and other ways to
participate in the CMA.
- The "Friends of the CMA" boasts 60
members who receive special discounts on tickets and "wearables"
- The CMA, now in its 12th season, has sponsored over
four dozen concerts.
- Concerts have an average attendance of 350
people. Concert programs are distributed to ever attendee.
- Acts have ranged from the traditional to more modern interpretations of
Celtic Music. Examples include: The New Barleycorn, The Dublin City
Ramblers, The Furevs, Altan. Beyond the Pale and Dervish.
- The CMA was responsible for bringing the Trinity Irish Dancers from
Chicago to Des Moines for a landmark performance. This performance received
support from the Iowa Arts Council.
- The Celtic Music Association participates in many neighborhood events,
including the Beaverdale Fall Festival.
- The CMA hosts an annual prayer service on St. Patrick's Day at St. Ambrose
Cathedral. This service features beautiful music from a local choir as well
as thoughtful prayer and recognition of our ties to Ireland. The service is
followed by an open reception to all who care to participate.
The Celtic Music Association has truly grown and developed since 1992. We are
now recognized as one of the premier Celtic Music organizations in the United
States. We are proud of that recognition and will continue to provide the
quality artistic expression of the Celtic culture that has become our signature.
We look forward to many more seasons, and once again, thanks for your support.
